A guide to care questions

What is it?

Does it help?

Can I get it?

How do visits work?

What will I pay?

What could go wrong?

Getting a useful assessment

Where can a real care visit start?

Start with a licensed health professional and the problem you want assessed. You do not need to choose a medicine from a list first.

Care facts as of September 2026.

Keep in mind

A useful visit starts with assessment and leaves room for questions and a different plan.

What kinds of visits can I compare?

An in-person visit takes place in a room with the health professional assessing you.

Telehealth is a remote visit by screen, phone or online exchange.

For either route, ask who will assess you, what they can examine, and how further care would be arranged.

What makes the assessment matter?

The U.S. medical boards’ group, the Federation of State Medical Boards, addresses this question in its guidance. A patient cannot just pick a medicine from a list and bypass proper assessment before prescribing.

In guidance checked in September 2026, patients must also be able to ask the health professional follow-up questions.

These are board guidance statements; each state supplies its enforceable rules.

Can the visit end without a prescription?

Ask that before paying. Ask what the fee covers if the health professional decides the requested product is not suitable.

Treat the visit as a chance to understand the problem and the options, rather than a promise of a particular medicine.

What if I need more than a screen visit?

When remote assessment falls short, medical-board guidance calls for any needed tests or a referral to be assessed in person.

Ask where that leaves you, who receives the records, and what further costs may arise.

What can I take away?

A useful visit starts with assessment and leaves room for questions and a different plan.

What can I read next?

Medical boards: why choosing from a medicine list is not enough

Read for assessment and the ability to ask questions; it is guidance rather than a nationwide law.

Medical boards: when remote care needs more

Covers further tests, referral and the same care standard for remote and in-person visits.
